Ag Environmental

Hen House                                                                                   ROL

In the class of Agri Environmental Science our main goal was to build a sustainable hen house that will not negatively impact the environment, along with figuring out what we will do with the manure. After we learned about different systems of egg productions for the second semester. I would say this is valuable for my future, because we are trying to find new ways to lower climate change since it negatively impacts our environment and I believe our generation can fix that. I also have chickens and I saw some very unfair egg production systems, chickens are very intelligent animals and we can build a sustainable proper hen house for them. The skills I developed during this semester while learning about the different hen house systems were; problem solving, creativity and critical thinking.Even Though I had used these skills before I further developed them during this course.
The purpose for a sustainable jhen house is to build a proper house for all the needs of a chicken; such as 16 hours of light, scratching pads, dust baths, private nest boxes, food water, and  time outside will be able to take care of the environment and not harm it.My house is made out of recycled plastic and the color will be light pink and yellow. I chose to use recycled plastic in a variety of ways, but the main 2 are that deforestation will decrease, since I won't use wood. I will use plastic to reduce plastic pollution as well. I decided to put a solar panel on the roof to power the temperature system on the inside. The tunnels which will lead the hens outside will be made out of wire frames instead of wood. Thankfully Mr.s Manabe gave us 2 different kami worksheets to finish. The first one had bullet points with ideas of the 4 requirements of the hen house. They were; animal well being, affordability, environmental sustainability & food safety. With the requirements I was able to construct an idea of how my hen house will be. Mrs. Manabe shared a web page on different sustainable hen houses. I picked my idea from the web page, but I decided to be creative and I added more details. I also decided to make the hen house bigger. I learned a variety of things about designing a sustainable hen house. The sustainable hen house will not only have all the needs for the chicken, but it will not harm the environment. I also learned that to help a hens produce a large number of egg production they need to be at least 16 hours under sunlight or light. Thankfully my hen house provides this and much more. With all the new maerical I learned I will remake the hen house of my real chicken, I will add new details and expand it, even though my hen spends most of her time outside.
The 2 main SLO’s I have demonstrated in this artifact was thinking critically and creatively along with a self directed learner who communicates effectively. While developing the sustainable hen house I used thinking critically and creatively by analyzing information on how I can create an eco-friendly hen house while provind all the needs for the hen. I also found a way to not waste the manure, I will turn the manure into fertilizer. I also demonstrated a self directed learner who communicates effectively by demonstrating a positive work ethic. I also participated and showed new ways to make the hen house sustainable. I expressed my creativity through this project. The SLO I could’ve demonstrated better in this project is Representing self, school, and community through personal responsibility and global citizenship. I could have participated more in class.
This course was one of the most interesting courses I had this year, I developed further skills that I am very proud of. The 2 most important things I learned in this course was how to turn manure into fertilizer, insteading of wasting it. I also learned how to build a sustainable hen house that will make the hens happy and will not harm the environment.
These skills have helped me a lot in a variety of ways. I will rearrange my hens house and add more details that she will enjoy. I will also make a new hen house that will be made out of recycled material instead of wood. In the future when I raise more chicks I will not harm the environment and create them a sustainable happy home.
